Materials and components, and their application in buildings demand the consideration of detail. The design decisions of were made to support the overall concept of contemporary articulated vernacular systems. The details are essential elements of the process during the metamorphosis of ideas into the finished showroom building. The investigations of skin system on facade, display and shelving, and stair informed the overall design approach.
Thatch material was the first component in the investigation process. A material that stems from vernacular construction and a natural tone that coincides with ABOVE STUDIOS identity. The thatch is modularly applied as a skin system that constructs the spaces of the building. the thatched straw is as an insulating barrier between showroom and street, when its absence gives opportunity for void and framed windows. This is possible through the detailed construction of the facade. A rectangular gridded system defines interior from exterior.
A Section model reveals the intuitive Japanese nature of the building. The systems of facade, structure, and circulation align with the investigated details of the process. A gridded alignment that technically develops and predefines new spaces. It reflects the traditional Japanese farmhouse, yet the tectonics and contemporarily determined.
