ABOUT
CONCRETE AND STEEL LAMP DETAIL MAKING
FALL 2022 DETAIL MAKING:
One was to provide a detail that appropriately expresses a specific function within a given context.
The first context was between CONCRETE and STEEL, as a lamp.
The process was to develop designs through research, exploration, analysis, synthesis and discussion. One practiced sketching techniques, technical language, 2D technical drawings a fabrication.
The design conceptually follows the tectonics of tension and orientation.
In elevation the lamp develops a different geometry from a front facing and a downward reflecting light. The steel components that make up the shade are grounded through a column towards the concrete base. The base is a cylinder with convex dome that grabs the pole.
The lightbulb is arranged to hang above the shade at a 90 degree angle. A bracket cut from 3 gauge steel . A 1/16” hole is drilled in a 1/4” bolt to house the steel cable, this is a socket bolt. The bolt with in the bracket is squeezes the wire to situate the lighting fixture. The same socket bolt is used to pull the 12 gauge steel sheet. The bolt is fixated in brackets screwed to the sheet. As the sheet is pulled and bent it forms the shade.
The bracket that holds the convex shade is made of 1/4” steel . The pieces were cut and welded to form an H bracket, housing brass bearings. The bearings are threaded to house steel knurled grip knobs. This detail offers point of rotations in the X and Z direction, pivoted the shade for desired light source.
